STORY AND PHOTOS BY CAM HUTCHINS

Working as an Electrician in a smaller town in BC, Bruce Krahn found a cool Older GMC truck in the yard of one of his customers in Sicamous. He got busy looking to see what parts were needed and during his hunt for parts he found another truck...or parts of one to buy. The 55 Chevy had a frame and a cab...but not much else.

He paid $600 and hauled it home in 2001. The hunt for parts then lead him to another local guy that used to love these old trucks...but had switched allegiance to early 60’s Pontiacs and let all his old truck parts go for $100. Now was the time to get at it but kids and family kept Bruce and his wife Monique just thought about the truck and made plans for the perfect truck for them.

Years of planning went by before it finally got into a shop in April 2009 at the coaxing of their friend Len Hepner. Hepner and his son Tyler specialize in building rides and Hepner’s wife Lidia did the custom white tuck n roll interior...a first for her. The truck was built very quickly except for a few breaks to come up for air and more cash.

The truck has very subtle mods to the body, but mechanically it is a long way from Kansas Toto!

The frame that initially came with the truck was C notched 8” in the rear to fully utilize the air bag suspension with the firestone bags on parallel leafs in the rear and Air Ride technology in front. The front got a 1980 Camaro clip complete with the Camaro disc brakes while the rearend is a Ford (“ posi unit with 3:50 gears and Ford Drum Brakes.

A Frame mounted booster helps with the stopping, the 20 gallon aluminum fuel cell is mounted between rear frame rails while the air suspension is supplied and controlled by a compressor, tanks and custom plumbing mounted inside the pickup box.

Interesting the pickup box is full depth except for a large “wall” between the wheels, creating in effect two storage compartments in the bed. Terrible for hauling 2x4’s but great for haulin” ass.

A 290 horse power Chevy crate motor was used with Brian Johnson installing a thumper cam. The Mill has cast iron GM exhaust manifolds, an Edlebrock EPS intake manifold and carb, with the hot air getting looked after by a custom 2 1/4" exhaust with magnaflow mufflers and exhaust tips.
